What caused the big fire in Perama
The residents of the Perama area escaped the worst of the large fire that broke out yesterday in the open air on L. Democracy Avenue, initially outside the fence of the fuel tanks in Kazania Perama, and soon spread due to strong winds on both sides of the road.
The fire also spread inside the facilities, with the flames licking at fuel pipes and tanks, which were affected and damaged, but fortunately did not catch fire, which would have had incalculable consequences for the area.
The initial start of the fire is estimated to have been outside the fence of the tanks, on the road, possibly even from a cigarette, with the investigation continuing to determine the reasons. However, what really acted as a catalyst in this case was the amount of litter discarded at the site, such as used bottles and cans of motor oil and petroleum products that had filled the underground passageway and acted as accelerants, constantly fanning the flames.
As a precautionary measure, a “112” alert was issued, calling on residents to close their windows and stay indoors, as even now that the fire has been extinguished, there are still dangerous particles in the atmosphere.
The fire department mobilized on a large scale at the site and made an equally large effort to prevent the tanks from being seized, while the roads in the area had to remain closed for quite some time for safety reasons, but also to facilitate the movement of fire department vehicles.
