Thessaloniki: Young man poisoned by sushi – Infected by the “anisakis” parasite
A 22-year-old in Thessaloniki developed serious poisoning after consuming sushi.
According to ERT, the 22-year-old ate sushi, felt unwell, and was taken to Papageorgiou Hospital.
There, he underwent surgery, as doctors initially believed he had a tumor. However, it was determined that he had been infected by the intestinal parasite “anisakis,” which is found in raw fish and improperly cooked food.
Anisakiasis is often associated with acute gastrointestinal symptoms such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. However, patients can range from being asymptomatic to requiring emergency care.
The 22-year-old was given the necessary antibiotics and is currently hospitalized out of danger, with his condition reported as stable.
According to the same reports, this is the first recorded case of poisoning by the “anisakis” parasite in Greece.
