Thasos flooded by storminess – Cars swept away, roads destroyed

The passage of storm “Adel” caused serious problems in Thasos, with heavy rainfall and widespread flooding, mainly in the northeastern part of the island.

The communities of Panagia and Potamia had a particularly difficult night, as the large amount of water in a short period of time caused serious damage. The force of the water caused landslides and destroyed sections of roads in Potamia, while many ground-floor houses and warehouses were flooded.

The strong flow swept away debris, rocks, and even parked cars. According to reports, a driver was swept away with his vehicle but was immediately rescued.

Traffic on major roads was temporarily suspended for safety reasons, while the fire department received at least five calls to pump out water.

The mayor of Thasos is advising residents to avoid unnecessary travel and to follow the instructions of the authorities, as the severe weather conditions are likely to continue.
